EAF16: Emerging Artist Fellowship
Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens
September 25, 2016 - March 9, 2017
In Dilated Surpintel, Lowenthal recrafts a grand piano into a sculptural exegesis on embellishment in display culture and architecture. Informed by the knowledge of how organs are structurally integrated into cathedrals, Dilated Surpintel envisions musical instrument as architectural model. Featuring an arcade, flying buttresses, and an inverted vaulted ceiling, the piece accentuates the seductive quality of play between interior and exterior space. Through the intersecting of these historical lineages simultaneously, Lowenthal pauses the transition of one object into another.
Exhibited as a part of EAF16: Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition, 2016, at Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, NY. Curated by Jess Wilcox, with curatorial advisors Larissa Harris and Amanda Hunt.
