In Islamic tradition, tiles were used to dissolve architectural space in favor of a meditative and transcendent state for the viewer. I think about patterns as this nexus of the intuitive and the structural, a type of immaterial evidence of experience. Patterns continue my broader interests in how our interaction of theoretical and actual systems— psychoanalysis, financial ledgers, public infrastructure — can be reflected into vernacular design. This type of pattern here I call a "blotter pattern." A blotter is shiftable in its definition as a tabulation, an obfuscation, or something that absorbs the excess of another.
