Secrets
Private Places, Portland, OR — November - December 2018
Secrets is an exhibition with works by Katie Aliprando, Aline Cautis, Sonja Gerdes, and Lia Lowenthal, organized by Private Places.
Secrets features Canetti (shoulder pattern) and Nexaplanon (elbow/knee pattern) (both works not dated), which are made from dyed canvas dropcloths. The forms of the dropcloths are from canvassing, used as an intermediate layer for mens suits, which create the structure of the garment and determine how the suiting fabric drapes and gravitates. The hand-painted text is derived from source material for the GETHENS series, such as Elias Canetti's Crowds and Power and the manual for Nexaplanon, a birth control implant— texts which theorize, reflect, or shape social infrastructures and determine one's mobility.
